I know that I can re-train my muscles to do new things.
With time and practice and a lot of failure, eventually I can jump higher, bend in places I couldn't before or stand straighter.
I know that I can retrain my mind to do new things.
With time and practice and a lot of failure I can be nicer to myself, let go of stresses and open to new ideas.
I know that I can retrain my way of seeing this world. With time, practice and a lot of failure I can...
1. Evidence of Hope is Abundant
When I clean my fridge, I have to take everything out and make a big mess. That does not mean that I am not progressing towards a greater goal and a better, cleaner fridge. Just because we can see the mess does not mean that it is hopeless. In fact, I see wonderful adaptations by humans. We are waking up and changing, it is all around us. I am excited for the future of humanity.
Take time to reflect on the positives and growth of humanity. Give space for the brilliance, the newness and the adaptations we have and continue to develop everyday.
2. Kids are Teaching Us
I love this quote by Socrates some 2500 years ago,
“Our youth now love luxury. They have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for their elders and love chatter in place of exercise; they no longer rise when elders enter the room; they contradict their parents, chatter before company; gobble up their food and tyrannize their teachers.” - Socrates.
It is the same thing I hear from some elders today. It is the energy of youth, the future that challenges us. I believe that in order to get respect for our elders we have to give respect to our youth. They are the ones that will continue our work, that will move us closer to a state of harmony and peace. Youth are taking command, taking responsibility and taking this world to a better place.
Take a moment to ask a child ten questions. Ask them about what they think, they see. Ask what they would do to better this world. Follow them around and see where they go.
3. The Government (or any major system) Does Not Need To Take Care of Us
We, as an individual, family, community, have the power to tend to our needs. There is no great body of power that controls us or that run our lives. We have the power and we can use it or give it away. I choose to take responsibility for my health and community. I choose to empower and educate myself. I choose to keep my power and use it where I feel it is best being served.
“If you could kick the person in the pants responsible for most of your trouble, you wouldn't sit for a month.” ― Theodore Roosevelt
4. No Room for Blame
If I could eliminate one thing from this world it would be blame. It is nearly impossible to change anything when we blame others for it not being changed. The victim remains a victim as long as they blame others or themselves.
This is not an simple task. I have failed at this more then any of the other ideas. I want to blame, it feels good to get angry at others. What I have noticed is that it does not help, it does not heal and it certainly limits my life. If I do not want to do something I find something to blame it on, that way I do not have to change.
I am learning to take responsibility for my life in a way that I am grateful for all the teachers I have. When I say teachers I not only mean the people who took time to show me something new, it also includes those who have traumatized me, those who have hurt me and those who have broken my trust. They have taught me so much about forgiveness, my expectations of others and my faith in myself.
5. There is only one Guru
Well this is not entirely true. There are billions of Gurus. You are one of them. I am one of them. I am my own Guru and you are yours. No one can know more about your life then you. No one can know your perspectives. You are your own greatest teacher, your master and your leader.
So those are some life changing practices that I put into practice everyday. I fail at them often and I give myself a lot of forgiveness.
