The Art of Just Enough
I was driving home a few weeks ago when I happened upon a turtle trying to cross a busy road. I instantly turned the car around, hearing a clear calling to help in that turtles journey across the road. I got out of the car and found that I was too late. This lovely little girl had been hit and its shell was broken in three places, its life was obviously drained from her eyes.
I felt like crying, but instead grabbed a plastic bag and put the turtle in it, leaving some tobacco to wish its ascendants a safe journey in their lives. I was being called to bring home the shell and glue it back together for a potential ceremonial piece.
The next day, I went out into the shed to start to clean the animal. I got my smudge and my tobacco and my tools all ready. I opened the bag and found a head poking out, fully alive and looking deep into my soul.
It took me a few minutes to get back my breath and accept what I just saw. I expected a dead life of a creature and got a lively soul looker.
I got her into some water, cleaned her off, did some research on how to treat it and sang and prayed with her. I gave her a name, Britney, connected to a dream I had the night before about saving Britney Spears.
